Sure, ghosts and goblins are frightening, but even they don’t match the fear that comes with stepping on the scale after you’ve downed one too many Halloween treats. With store shelves dripping in candy this time of year, it can be tough to just say no to the omnipresent candy corn and caramel apples.

If you need a little help navigating the gauntlet that is this treat-tastic time of year, try these tips:

• If you’re handing out candy at your house, don’t buy it early—having it sitting around is just a cruel invitation for it to call out to you to be eaten. Better yet, consider giving away stickers, pencils or another “treat” that doesn’t contain masses of sugar and empty calories.

• Celebrate the season with goodies that are actually good for you (or at least not terrible). Warm apple cider and roasted pumpkin seeds are festive choices. You can also get super creative with things like hard-boiled eggs decorated as ghosts and broccoli stalks as creepy trees. And yes, healthy foods are tastier when they’re all dolled up!

• If it’s not October 31 without a Snickers bar, then go ahead and have one (just don’t have 10). Depriving yourself of all the sweets you love won’t work in the long run, especially during the holidays, but finding a way to make them an occasional treat is important—and this is one day that you can make a good case to have that every-so-often indulgence.

• Forget the after-Halloween sales. Yes, candy can be found at amazing prices, but do you really need a supersize bag of Tootsie Rolls? Unless your willpower is strong enough to ration those out for the next year, it’s better to pass, no matter how good the deal.

Now that you know these tricks, enjoy the treats of Halloween. Just remember that the scariest thing should be the ghoulish costumes you see—not the extent to which you veer away from the healthy lifestyle habits you’ve worked so hard to put in place.
