So what exactly is BMI?
Healthcare practitioners use body mass index, commonly known as BMI, to get a quick gauge of whether a person has excess weight that could lead to health problems and is the most common diagnostic tool used to identify obesity. By plugging your height and weight into our BMI calculator, you can get a value that will classify you as underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese. In general, the higher your BMI, the greater risk you have for obesity-related diseases like type 2 diabetes and stroke.
Approximately 127 million adults in the US are overweight (BMI>25), 60 million are obese (BMI>30) and 9 million are extremely obese (BMI>40). 67.9% of the male population is overweight in New Jersey and 49.5% of the female population is overweight in New Jersey.
Locally and nationally, obesity has reached epidemic status. In fact, for the first time in more than two hundred years, the current generation of children in America are doomed to have shorter life expectancies than their parents because of the rapid rise of childhood obesity and the host of illnesses it brings.
The good news? This can all end today—and it starts with you. When you make a change for the better, it impacts your entire family for the better.
